Florida Auto Insurance

Florida is a “No Fault” state. That means that every driver is required to purchase Personal Injury Protection, PIP, in which the driver’s or policy holder’s (“first party”) insurance company covers non-catastrophic injury-related expenses and associated costs as a result of an accident regardless who is “at fault.” This insures that every motorist will receive immediate medical attention. Also, this limits a driver from suing or being sued for damages as a result of an accident in most cases. However, based on the severity of the accident/injury or monetary amount, if you are at fault you may be subject to a lawsuit for damages.

Important Florida Auto Insurance Laws!

All vehicles registered or operated in FL require a Florida auto insurance liability policy issued by a Florida agent with an insurance company licensed in Florida.

You must carry Florida auto insurance if you have a valid Florida tag, even if your vehicle is in another state or non-inoperative. There are no exemptions in the law.

You can not be pulled over for non-seat belt use. However, if pulled over for another traffic offense or if you get into an accident, the penalty for not wearing a seat belt is: damage mitigation; $30 fine; all seats.

If you have been in an accident, or have been convicted of certain traffic offenses, you may be required to buy bodily injury liability coverage (BIL).

Taxicabs and limousines are exempt from the mandatory personal injury protection and property damage liability insurance coverage. However, if you are "at fault" in an accident, and you do not have full coverage including bodily injury liability, under Florida auto insurance law you must purchase auto insurance with full liability coverage and meet other requirements.
